Based Europeans. I found a stack of Rosa's and Barks' various Scrooge McDuck comics in the back of my grandfather's shed when I was young.

Yeah, holy fuck. Has Disney ever been blessed with writing like that again? The one-off stuff was great. I remember a comic where Gizmo invents a device that can stop time, which the Beagle Boys used to rob Scrooge. That was such an interesting sci-fi concept, explored in a Disney comic! I remember another one where Scrooge found Xanadu! Super memorable.

But man, none of that stacked up to The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. I mean, I only had one issue of it - the one where he goes to Alaska for gold. Even still, the emotion in that part of the story is seared into my brain. The fact that they could tell stories of that depth with the "he's greedy, get the joke?" character is fucking amazing.

Mind you, I haven't reread any of this in years. It's etched into my memory. Rosa and Barks are some of the best to ever work in the American comics scene. I don't think I found anything as compelling until I discovered Tintin.

I just wrote in a other comment how the life and times of scrooge mcduck album by tuomas is an absolute masterpiece!!

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I had never heard of this before! Listened to Cold Heart of the Klondike, and I can see the pages turning in my head.

Fuck, I need to buy a complete collection of the comics.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

There's a video for the album too!

But im mainly a fan of the music. Fun fact the female vocalist is Tuomas' wife, and they got married the year this album came out.

As far as behind shack magazines go, you might've lucked out

The scrooge mcduck comics and the album Nightwish Composer/keyboardist Tuomas H. wrote are amazing. Way better than youd think.

Nightwish? Like the metal opera goth band from the 90s and 00s?

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

Correct. One of the best bands ever ;)

Tuomas is the keyboardist and composer for them. He does a lot of other work too.

there is a music album inspired by "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" by Nightwish's Tuomas Holopainen

[–] jagermo@feddit.org 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is modern poetry.

Last Sled to Dawson is fantastic

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 43 points 1 week ago (3 children)

As a North American, I'll happily listen to your Donald Duck comics love, but you better bring some Asterix and Obelix at the same time.

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 days ago

Yess! Can't leave my favourite Gaulians out of this. They'll come with.

[–] DharmaCurious@startrek.website 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

North american here: I love Donald Duck. Lol. My mom used to a spot on Donald Duck voice to entertain us as kids. Told us he jumped out of the TV once and lived in her belly.

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Your mom sounds awesome! I had to learn to do that myself to add a bit of comedic effect to certain situations. Alas I only learned to imitate goofy of all those cartoon voices..

She was pretty fucking awesome.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca -2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

northern american

So, like, Michigan?

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

Never met anyone from Michigan, but yup I'll treat everyone equally and promise to talk about Donald Duck to them too.

[–] stenAanden@feddit.dk 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've annoyed Mexicans with this fact last year. Going for a Canadian soon.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Donald Duck?

That antifa terrorist?

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Der Fuehrer's Face? The one that manages to be anti-fascist but also racist at the same time?

Plenty of WW2 antifa racists tbh

[–] Sergio@piefed.social 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I believe Donald Duck is pretty popular in Southern Europe too, especially Italy. I learned to read Italian from a hoard of old Paperinos / Topolinos a neighbor had.

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Here in Sweden it's a Christmas tradition to watch Donald duck for some reason.

[–] Sergio@piefed.social 9 points 6 days ago

Today I learned that in Sweden, Donald Duck's name is Karl "Kalle" Magnus Anka.

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I don't understand why don't Americans like carl barks and don rosa?

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Have you read the American version of those comics? It is the only media I prefer in translated form, because the American lettering is extremely annoying. The grammar is weird, like spelling it "Unca Donald" instead of "uncle", and every sentence has one or two words in bold. All the bold words feel like an aggressive way of showing emphasis which is so exaggerated that I find it exhausting to read.

As a contrast, Norwegian Donald Duck comics were advertised from day 1 as "translated by a teacher", and there has always been an emphasis on good grammar. And most importantly, no bold words all over the place! We can figure out where to put the emphasis ourselves, thank you very much.

[–] Klear@quokk.au 21 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Huh. I googled "Carl Barks", expecting it to be a cartoon dog and a parody of communists but it's the actual name of the guy who drew those.

[–] miseducator@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Came here to comment about a Communist cartoon dog after reading the name.

[–] chatokun@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago

I thought the exact same thing.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Lmao, made me snort

[–] MohamedMoney@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Glad to share. Basic income is becoming an increasingly important issue for our time.

[–] HelluvaKick@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

I mean the guy who made Astro Boy based all of his character designs off the Donald Duck comics, and manga is the most popular form of comics in North America, so in conclusion, everydays a hurricane, here in america.
