...the terms "homosexuality, homosexual, and Gender" hold undesirable connotations within Iraqi society.

Fellas, is it gay to have a gender?

[-] vlad76@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 1 year ago

With how many there are now, statistically, yes.

They are directing that the term “sexual deviancy” be used instead.

Iraq and Florida should get a room. They’re made for each other.

You mean sexually deviant?

[-] No_Eponym@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago

Totally legal, and totally cool, and totally straight.

[-] Jimbo@yiffit.net 5 points 1 year ago

Who says I wasn't doing sexual deviancy already?

[-] megane_kun@lemm.ee 27 points 1 year ago

Iraq's Media and Communications Commission has issued a directive instructing all media and social media platforms in the country to refrain from using the terms "homosexual" or "homosexuality" and instead use "sexual deviancy."

The decision, reported widely by Iraq's state and private news outlets, was made to safeguard societal values and public order, the commission said, noting that the terms "homosexuality, homosexual, and Gender" hold undesirable connotations within Iraqi society.

What? They think calling someone a sexual deviant is better than calling someone a homosexual?

I can't even give them the leeway and say it's just meant to say “you're a minority.” They chose the word ‘deviant’ here: which implies there's a ‘correct’ sex

Maybe that's the point though. You're not allowed to be anything other than a straight male in Iraq.

[-] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

It’s absolutely the point, they want to shame the gays into hiding. Later will come the executions if this doesn’t work

[-] qarbone@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

Your logical mistake is assuming this is meant to be an actual alternative. It's them blatant saying gay people are unwelcome.

[-] AndreyAsimow@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Still better than "sexually retarded"

[-] No_Eponym@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago

I think the correct term is "sexually challenged."

[-] AndreyAsimow@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Sexually deranged, maybe?

[-] megane_kun@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Actually had a belly laugh at this one, thanks!

There is a “correct sex” according the the Little Pebble cult. It involves a lot of yogurt.

[-] megane_kun@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

I shouldn't have looked it up.

It's far worse than what I imagined it to be, far far worse.

[-] famousringo@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 year ago

They’ve done it! They’ve defeated gayism!

[-] Hobbes@startrek.website 21 points 1 year ago

So… “Don’t say gay”?

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Those to are not interchangeable. The terms homosexual and sexual deviant are 2 entirely different things one is a somewhat common form of attraction the other enjoys being shat on.

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

I'd argue that consenting adults can do what they want, the "deviants" are the ones trying to break the covenant of consent.

Usa: hold my beer!

[-] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Florida already did this for their schools at least, the press is harder to silence in the us though

[-] FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

"FREEDOM OF SPEECH! No, not like that!"

[-] AndreyAsimow@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

You mean limited freedom of speech, right?

Right?

[-] Deckname@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 year ago

I wouldn't say free, more like under new management.

[-] CoolSouthpaw@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Honestly, I'm just surprised they didn't do this sooner...

[-] discostjohn@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago

How do you guys feel about these clickbaity headlines?

[-] Wilshire@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I assumed it's because they didn't want to put 'sexual deviant' in their headline.

[-] FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago
[-] charonn0@startrek.website 2 points 1 year ago

If your societal values and public order are that tenuous and fragile, then perhaps you're focusing on the wrong problems.

Religion of peace

[-] Crisps@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

How did the media communicate this? Seems like a catch 22!
